Met Gala Style 2015

Last night’s Met Gala was a busy time in the fashion world! I woke up to images of hundreds of dresses that graced the red carpet and overall, I was pretty impressed with them! The theme for this years event was ‘China: Through The Looking Glass’ and overall I think the theme was interpreted well into stylish, beautiful gowns, dresses and outfits that were seen.

The most talked about was Rihanna in Guo Pei. I mean, come on, how can this NOT be the most talked about outfit from the night. I’d expect nothing less from Rihanna, and while the colour and feather trim were not to my taste, she rocked the red carpet.

The other statement outfits came from Karen Elson in Dolce and Gabbana, Sarah Jessica Parker (sorry, but she’s lost it) in custom H&M and a Philip Treacy hat, Lady Gaga in Balenciaga and Kerry Washington in Prada. Overall the only one that impressed was Karen Elson, appearing regal in gold and red.

Statement

Speaking of red, there was LOADS of it on the red carpet, a little too much for my taste. I adore a beautiful red dress at an event like this (see here for my Oscars review) but I would have liked a little more originality. Kendall Jenner in her jade Calvin Klein gown was sublime, as was Joan Smalls in Roberto Cavalli.

Some of my favourite red’s were from Poppy Delevigne in divine Marchesa, Sienna Miller in Thakoon, Alison Williams in Giambattista Valli and Gigi Hadid in stunning Diane von Furstenburg.

Red1

The second round of reds include Helen Mirren in Dolce and Gabbana (future goals), Jaime King showing her gorgeous bump off in this simple Hugo Boss gown, Rita Ora in Tom Ford and Reese Witherspoon doing her thing in Jason Wu.

Red2

The last round of reds are a little disappointing, and don’t pop on the carpet like the others. Vanessa Hudgens in H&M, Hailee Steinfeld in Michael Kors, Karolina Kurkova in Tommy Hilfiger and Amal Clooney in ruffled Maison Margiela. I’m probably being unfair to Amal to be honest, the more I look at her dress, the more I like it.

One of the beauty trends on this years red carpet were the dark lips, as rocked by these beauties. An extreme look that lent itself really well to this years theme. Pictured is Adriana Lima, Carey Mulligan, Claire Danes, Lily Aldrige and my fave, Rosie Huntington-Whitely. Beautiful.

The other ladies who were on point with their interpretation of the theme were Anne Hathaway in this STUNNING gold hooded Ralph Lauren gown, Kate Mara in this elegant Diane von Furstenberg dress, Lily Collins nailed it in this classic Chanel outfit and Cara Delevignes edgy temporary body art showed that fashion is not just material. Loved them.

Now for the other most talked about dresses, the booty shots. These nude/crystal/feathered delights worn by the most bootilicious women in the world…but whose was best? I’m going to have to say…Kim K.

Booty

Beyonce’s Givenchy see through is beautiful, and she has the body to show it off, but her make up aged her and she looked a bit tired and a bit fed up to be honest. Jennifer Lopez wore Versace Atelier but that side angle shows just an inch too much skin. Kim Kardashian’s Roberto Cavalli dress had the nude in all the right places, and she looked the most comfortable in her dress, and the feathered train is sublime.

GoldDivine

My other favourites were the gold dresses worn by Jessica Chastain in Givenchy (her complexion!), Kate Beckinsale in Diane von Furstenberg and Kate Hudson in impressive Michael Kors.

Of course Rosie Huntington-Whitely is divine in this Versace Atelier one shouldered dress, Sofia Vergara sticking to her glamourous style in Marchesa and Sophie Turner is killing it in this Burberry dress. I’m surprised she wasn’t featured more in some of the style reviews I’ve read so far.

Now for the not so goods, and there are a few. These outfits say it all, I love ladies pushing the envelope in terms of style on a red carpet but some of these are just, no.

Chloe Sevigny fails again, while Zac Posen has done Katie Holmes no justice in this dress, even a dramatic hair cut can’t save it. Emily Blunt gives me horrid 90’s flashbacks in this satin dress, and Katy Perry’s Moschino gown is a little last season. That colour dress and those gloves on Olivia Wilde are a let down from Michael Kors.

These dresses definitely fit into the ‘What were you thinking?’ category. Zendaya, Solange, Chloe Grace Moretz, Lisa Bonet and Karolina Kurkova miss the point completely.

What were your favourites from the red carpet at this years event?
